<![CDATA[ Natasha's Dress : Language of Literature, Language of Fashion ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864984 Editeur : Peter Lang

This book explores interconnections between high literary modernism and the revolution in dress design of the early twentieth century. During this time, new and «liberated» lifestyles created a bond among figures as diverse as writers and fashion editors, painters and art critics, photographers and models, dancers and economists ? all of whom were in different ways looking at new «inventive clothes» (Vreeland) as life experiences.

Starting points of the research are Pirandello's One, no one, and one hundred thousand, where the protagonist's disowning of his own image in the mirror ignites a tragedy, and Roger Fry's essays on the resuscitation of Victorianism at the end of the First World War, where the phantasmagoria of time is identified as the basis for modern illusion.

Each chapter in the book explores a different facet of the same topic: the distance between self and image as the dispenser or destroyer of enchantment. This issue was actively pursued by philosophers (Benjamin), writers (Woolf, Mansfield, Fitzgerald), photographers (Man Ray, Cecil Beaton) and fashion critics (Vreeland). The evolution in fashion editing was meanwhile instructing the sophisticated readers of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in the art of contemplating their own reflections in the mirror and seeing in them exactly what they wanted to see.

The Natasha of the title is Tolstoy's heroine, a secret spring of creative energy for Katherine Mansfield, and the source of one of Diana Vreeland's most perceptive insights into the nature of fashion.

<![CDATA[ The Mabo Turn in Australian Fiction ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864983 Editeur : Peter Lang

Winner of the Association for Anglophone Postcolonial Studies (GAPS) Dissertation Award 2018

This is the first in-depth, broad-based study of the impact of the Australian High Court's landmark Mabo decision of 1992 on Australian fiction. More than any other event in Australia's legal, political and cultural history, the Mabo judgement ? which recognised indigenous Australians' customary «native title» to land ? challenged previous ways of thinking about land and space, settlement and belonging, race and relationships, and nation and history, both historically and contemporaneously. While Mabo's impact on history, law, politics and film has been the focus of scholarly attention, the study of its influence on literature has been sporadic and largely limited to examinations of non-Aboriginal novels.

Now, a quarter of a century after Mabo, this book takes a closer look at nineteen contemporary novels ? including works by David Malouf, Alex Miller, Kate Grenville, Thea Astley, Tim Winton, Michelle de Kretser, Richard Flanagan, Alexis Wright and Kim Scott ? in order to define and describe Australia's literary imaginary as it reflects and articulates post-Mabo discourse today. Indeed, literature's substantial engagement with Mabo's cultural legacy ? the acknowledgement of indigenous people's presence in the land, in history, and in public affairs, as opposed to their absence ? demands a re-writing of literary history to account for a ?Mabo turn? in Australian fiction.

<![CDATA[ Léo Hamon (1908-1993) ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864981 Editeur : P.I.E. Peter Lang

<![CDATA[ How to Address the Loss? Forced Migrations, Lost Territories and the Politics of History : A Comparative Approach in Europe and at its Margins in the XXth Century ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864976 Editeur : P.I.E. Peter Lang

The map of Europe has been redrawn several times during the XXth century, in peaceful or violent ways, and the shifting of borders has often been associated with forced migrations. But despite the fact that this has been the fate of millions of Europeans, the memory of it has so far received little attention beyond national borders. This book examines how hosting states and societies, as well as groups that were forced to leave, deal with the memory of the loss in the long term. It explores the politics of history and the conflicting interpretations of the loss associated with forced migrations.

In a comparative and diachronic approach, the book depicts the interactions between the actors involved in the politics of history: their motivations, their resources and the public they seek to address. It looks at the different contexts in which these actors evolve and traces the changes of these politics in time and space. It shows how the memory of territorial loss associated with forced migrations interferes with the present and how it has evolved within the political constrains of good neighborhood as well as of European and international standards that have emerged since the end of the cold war.

By confronting case studies in Europe and at its margins, the book questions the emergence of more inclusive collective memories and memory cultures. It is a significant contribution to a comparative approach on forced migrations and politics of history relating to loss.

<![CDATA[ German and United States Second World War Military Cemeteries in Italy : Cultural Perspectives ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864973 Editeur : Peter Lang

Styles of soldiers' commemoration reveal national self-images. US WW II military cemeteries in Italy and their German counterparts are analyzed as art-historical artifacts. Their aesthetics, together with results of archival research, reveal a self-assured US united in values, projecting victory and Pax-Americana while a struggling Germany searches for its democratic identity and a place within the community of civilized nations. In Italy, the US relied on imported European classicism as taught at the influential American Academy in Rome and interpreted through the personalities of the cemeteries' designers. Germany's designs, rejecting Nazi classicism, progressed through an inherited unique blend of medievalism with modernism toward a contemporary style that integrates modernism and expressionism. The US honors soldiers' death as worthy sacrifice for the nation's greatness and the world's future. Germany focuses on mourning and interprets soldiers' death as tragedy whose only meaning can be an admonition to seek peace.

<![CDATA[ Sardinia from the Middle Ages to Contemporaneity : A case study of a Mediterranean island identity profile ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864972 Editeur : Peter Lang

The book offers a historical and methodological update of founding historical themes and moments, and a methodological review more than ever necessary of current interpretations of the History of Sardinia between the Early Middle Ages and the Modernity from an identitarian point of view. And that by means of a greater interaction between History, History of Art, Geography, Archaeology and Architecture.

Sardinia has been taken as a case study due to its island nature, with boundaries clearly determined by Geography and, moreover, by its extremely conservative nature. The authors' aim is to provide scholars with new data and new reading keys to interpret Sardinian History and its Cultural Heritage. Both strongly conditioned by the permanence of Sardinia in Roman and Byzantine orbit, lato sensu, for more than a millennium (3rd c. b.C - 11th c. a.C) and by two other important elements: only about 80 years of a virtually irrelevant Vandalic domain and no Muslim lasting settlements throughout the High Middle Ages, not so far decisively confirmed by Archaeology.

<![CDATA[ Approaches to Telephone Interpretation : Research, Innovation, Teaching and Transference ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864967 Editeur : Peter Lang

The book gives an overview of telephone interpretation from a professional, innovative and pedagogical approach. There are not many studies on telephone interpretation, as this technique was first introduced in the twentieth century. Nevertheless, it is becoming very popular due to its effectiveness: it is an excellent option for situations that cannot be planned in advance (for instance, emergency services), it is provided immediately and it is available 24/7, it relies on readily available everyday technology (mobile telephones) and it decreases the cost of the interpretation services. Due to these advantages, many interpreters and students are interested in becoming specialists.

This book is unique in its perspective and contributors. It was written by specialists who are involved fist-hand in the study and practice of telephone interpretation: pioneers and successful companies providing the service, researchers who are carrying out state-of-the-art investigations, telephone interpreters who describe their day-to-day work; and university lecturers, who provide academic and pedagogical approaches by designing lessons and hypothetical cases for students to practice.

<![CDATA[ Resolution of Conflict of Interest in Chinese Civil Court Hearings : A Perspective of Discourse Information Theory ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864966 Editeur : Peter Lang

The rapid development of China's economy has resulted in various kinds of conflict of interest (COI). This study focuses on how COI is resolved in Chinese civil court hearings via discourse information processing. Based on Discourse Information Theory, and the notions of Context Model Schema and Discourse Space, an analytical framework is constructed for the description, analysis and interpretation of the language used in Chinese court hearings.

Data analysis has revealed the following major findings: a) litigants in Chinese civil court hearings mainly resort to three information categories when making interest appeals: subjective, objective and explanatory information; b) the process of interest negotiation in court hearings is greatly influenced by such sociological, psychological and discursive factors as identities, intentions, information sharing status, discourse expectations, etc.; and c) different discourse management strategies are adopted to promote conciliation between litigants, among which information management, cognitive management and linguistic management are the most frequently used.

<![CDATA[ Philosophy of Picture : Denis Diderot's Salons ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864965 Editeur : Peter Lang

If it is true that a painting can ?think visually', then it is also true that Diderot was the first to say so?-?and he has spelled out this concept better than anyone else. Diderot's Salons show that the ?imaginal' sense that arises from the engagement with a picture needs to be investigated using the concepts of ékphrasis and theatricality?-?the capacity to explore the power of pictures in relation to the composition of the scene, to the expressive and pantomimic gestures, and to what can be called a ?theory of affections'.

The book will focus on an issue that pertains to the theory of pictures, on a question that is ground-breaking in the English-speaking academic context: how can we look at a picture in order to rethink aesthetics as a discipline that allows us to look at pictures from a philosophical point of view?

The Salons demonstrate that the ?imaginal' process leading to knowledge always emerges from the picture itself, and that this process always needs to be supported by a method of inquiry that can rightly be called a philosophical method?-?as Diderot was a philosopher himself. Even when approaching this issue from a contemporary perspective, this method should always be related to the concepts of ékphrasis and theatricality. Fundamental, however, is also the ?pathetic', the emotionally stimulating, due to its essential relation to the enjoyment of pictures - something rooted in aesthetic disinterestedness, absorption and, conversely, voyeurism.

The book reports a usage-based study of the complementation patterns in a corpus of 335 illocutionary nouns distributed across the five Searlean classes of assertive, commissive, directive, expressive, and declarative nouns. The investigation aims to verify the association between the meaning of these nouns and their complementation patterns, and between their semantic similarity and the similarity in the distribution of complementation patterns.

<![CDATA[ Richard III as a Romantic Icon : Textual, Cultural and Theatrical Appropriations ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864961 Editeur : Peter Lang

This book adopts a multi-perspective approach to the historical and dramatic figure of Richard III during the «long» Romantic period, taking into consideration his controversial reputation among historians of the time; his changing place within the critical literature; nineteenth-century adaptations of Shakespeare?s play; and above all the contrasting stage interpretations of Richard as dramatis persona, in the performances of such iconic players as David Garrick, George Frederick Cooke and Edmund Kean. The overall picture that emerges is that of the object of almost inexhaustible fascination among the Romantics. The author illustrates, based on abundant documentary evidence, the surprising degree to which Richard is found at the centre of the literary, theatrical, ideological and ethical debates over a period of several decades. Richard?s iconic centrality in turn sheds light on Romantic culture at large, and in particular on its understanding of Shakespeare, grounded above all in character analysis, often of a moral and political nature, that tended to hypostasize Shakespeare's villainous king, extrapolating him from his dramaturgic context.

<![CDATA[ No! In Whispers : The Rhetoric of Dissent in American Writing ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864958 Editeur : Peter Lang

No! In Whispers is based on the assumption that dissent, particularly in literary writing, is not necessarily shouted. Rather, it is conveyed by means of persuasion strategies, through subtle transversal allusions and an undercurrent of moral analysis and protest, through what can metaphorically be defined as ?whispers' that penetrate the readers' conscience and are meant to promote change. The essays in this book explore the rhetoric of dissent in a range of texts that include letters, novels, poems and nonfiction, mostly focusing on selected works by such authors as Abigail Adams, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mary Ovington, Toni Morrison, Adrienne Rich, Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo. The last two chapters, devoted to nonfiction, consider Edward Said's memoir and the debate about the New Musicology. The authors come from four different countries and have largely distinct cultural backgrounds and scientific interests; thus they analyze the statements of dissent from various angles utilizing different methodological approaches. They concur in outlining the image of a country that has been historically torn by the tension between what it is and what it was meant to be.

<![CDATA[ Dissident Spirits : The Post-Insular Imprint in Puerto Rican/Diasporic Literature ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864956 Editeur : Peter Lang

This book explores the post-insular imprint in Puerto Rican letters through a sample of authors from the island and the diaspora. From a canonical figure like Alejandro Tapia to the post-Nuyorican poet Víctor Hernández Cruz, and from the working-class feminism of Luisa Capetillo and Franca de Armiño to Virginia Sánchez Korrol's narrative homage to the legacy of Emilia Casanova, trends such as dissidence and migration are core to the understanding of the Puerto Rican and its diasporic experiences. In Tapia's case, his Póstumo saga offers a transmigrated subject who questions the gender binary. Regarding Capetillo and Armiño, a sample of their plays shows not only a global awareness, but also the intersection between class and gender issues to challenge patriarchal constraints. A related intersection, the one between gender and racial matters, is key in Casanova's understanding of freedom and the pan-Antillean consciousness that Boricua historian Sánchez Korrol underscores in her novel about the Cuban activist. To conclude this examination of the post-insular imprint in works by authors in diverse canons and working in different genres, the closing chapter is dedicated to Hernández Cruz's poetry as an unequivocal celebration of the migratory experience of the Caribbean. These writers, thus, emerge as migrants of the word in a spirit of dissidence against colonialist notions of Puerto Rico, its diaspora, and the Caribbean.

<![CDATA[ Demonic Possession, Vulnerability, and Performance in Medieval French Drama ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864955 Editeur : Peter Lang

Just like the modern hysteric, a figure that catalyzes clinical vocabularies confirming medieval theological anxieties, the demoniac has been considered an "anomalous" and "abnormal" manifestation of womanhood. Incapable of self-governance, both linguistic and corporeal, the medieval possessed is placed in the category of the pathological. The symptoms of possession are part of a multilayered discourse coined by medieval theologians, authors of exempla, hagiographers, and natural philosophers. The subjectivity of the demoniac becomes, thus, a fetishistic construction which allows medieval male intellectuals to ponder questions about demons, the supernatural, and the human body. Demonic Possession, Vulnerability, and Performance in Medieval French Drama advocates for an affective and ethical framework of reading the vocabularies of possession in which the demoniac's convulsions, contortions, shrieks of pain, and snapshots of disarticulated language are not conceptualized as "pathological" but as a model of intercorporeality built around modalities of sensuous exchange between the bodies of both the possessed and of those whom she comes in contact with. Can we think of a corporeal agency of the "anomalous" body of the possessed independent of reason and articulated language? What happens when such distorted bodies enter zones of visual, haptic, and aural contact with abled-bodied individuals? Can possession be considered as a producer of a sensuous type of knowledge that alters the way sovereign subjects perceive themselves? Taking as primary sources a series of late-medieval French Passion Plays and hagiographical plays authored by poetic and religious figures such as Arnoul Gréban, André de la Vigne, Eustache Mercadé, and Jean Michel, this book argues that the lyrical capaciousness of the plays as forms of narrativized poetics allows us to understand demonic possession as a series of bodily narratives of pain, of healing, of witnessing, and, ultimately, of vulnerability.

<![CDATA[ Beyond the Juxtaposition of Nature and Culture : Lawrence Krader, Interdisciplinarity, and the Concept of the Human Being ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864954 Editeur : Peter Lang

The essays contained in Beyond the Juxtaposition of Nature and Culture represent an attempt by scholars from Canada, Germany, and Mexico to come to grips with the innovative work of the American philosopher and anthropologist Lawrence Krader who has proposed nothing less than a new theory of nature, according to which there are at least three different orders?the material-biotic, the quantum, and the human?which differ from one another according to their different configurations of space-time, and which cannot be reduced the one to the others. Each author takes up Krader's theory in relation to its impact on their own discipline: sociology, anthropology, the study of myth, the theory of labor and value, economics, linguistics, and aesthetics. The question of how nature and culture can be integrated within a theoretical framework which links them in difference and nexus and allows each their non-reductive space leads each of the contributors to move in their thinking beyond the old dualisms of materialism and idealism, fact and value, nature and culture.

<![CDATA[ Incorruptible Love : The K. H. Ting Story ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864952 Editeur : Peter Lang

K. H. Ting (1915?2012) was an important Christian leader and theologian in China. Indeed, since the late-1970s, he has been seen as the spokesperson for Christianity in China. Many stories surround his life, but it is sometimes unclear which ones are true, making him a mysterious figure.

K. H. Ting became the principal of Jinling Theological Seminary in 1952 and remained in this position until his death, making him the longest-standing principal of any theological seminary in the world. He experienced many difficult times in his 97 years, and in any ways the history of Christianity in China is reflected through the ups and downs he experienced. In Incorruptible Love: The Story of K. H. Ting, the authors offer Christians, as well as people of other spiritual beliefs, intellectuals, and the general public, a greater understanding of K. H. Ting's life and beliefs. This biography will help people learn not only about K. H. Ting, but also about the fundamentals of Chinese Christianity.

Written in a blend of creative and academic writing styles, Incorruptible Love makes the story of K. H. Ting vivid and convincing. This text can be used in courses on Christianity in China, the Chinese Church, religion in China, and modern Chinese history.

<![CDATA[ Becoming Fiction : Reassessing Atheism in Duerrenmatt's «Stoffe» ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864951 Editeur : Peter Lang

Becoming Fiction: Reassessing Atheism in Dürrenmatt's Stoffe sets forth a clarification of the importance of Friedrich Dürrenmatt, modern Swiss dramatist, essayist, novelist and self-proclaimed atheist (1921?1990), and offers new insights into the ways in which his father's vocation as a Protestant minister, along with Dürrenmatt's own decision as a young man to pursue a career in writing rather than religion, shaped his world view and, in particular, made necessary a final, desperate attempt to fictionally recast his own life through revisions and amplifications of many of his earlier works when he created his final prose volume, Stoffe. Dürrenmatt devoted immense energy in his writings to wrestling with his father's God as a way of seeking self-identity. That perceived loss of his father's esteem became the motor behind his works. After earlier successes, the icy reception of his most ambitious play, Der Mitmacher, in 1976, left the author in such a frustrated state of disappointment that he reached a point of linguistic breakdown. This book contends that Dürrenmatt's loss of voice forced the author to a new kind of writing: a ?re-turn' home. Becoming Fiction explores the damage caused by Dürrenmatt's inability to express his most central beliefs through the outdated, deceptive modes of linguistic thought and tradition. Consequently, the book argues, at the point of that breakdown of rigid linguistic and theological concepts, a space was forced open, and the Stoffe reveal a Divine presence.

<![CDATA[ Both Sides of the Table : Autoethnographies of Educators Learning and Teaching With/In [Dis]ability ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864950 Editeur : Peter Lang

Both Sides of the Table is a set of evocative, heartfelt, personal, and revealing stories, told by educators about how their experiences with disability, personally and in the lives of family members, has affected their understanding of disability. It uses disability studies and critical theory lenses to understand the autoethnographies of teachers and their personal relationships with disability. The book takes a beginning look at the meaning of autoethnography as a method of inquiry, as well as how it has been (and will be) applied to exploring disability and the role of education in creating and sustaining it. The title refers to the context in which educators find themselves in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings for students with disabilities in schools. There, educators often sit on the other side of the table from people with disabilities, their families, and their allies. In these chapters, the authors assume roles that place them, literally, on both sides of IEP tables. They inscribe new meanings ? of relationships, of disability, of schools, of what it means to be an educator and a learner. It is a proposal (or perhaps a gentle manifesto) for what research, education, disability, and a utopian revolutionary politics of social transformation could and should look like.

Faith was not only the theme of Søren Kierkegaard's life, but also the systematic center of his thought. The studies collected in this volume represent an attempt to understand Kierkegaard's theory of faith from different perspectives and on different levels of analysis. Not only will the central aspects and fundamental challenges of his theory be illuminated, the development of his theory of faith, which is marked by a wide array of educational and discursive contexts, will also be investigated against the background of his engagement with the philosophical-theological debates of his time and close involvement with other thinkers in his immediate environment. The volume concludes with a glance at the history of the translation and reception of Kierkegaard's work.

This book aims to shed new light on asceticism of the heart and imperial Christian aspects in the ascetic life of Melania the Younger, in particular, and of a specific group of Roman aristocratic ascetic women, in general. The author draws on the examination of rhetorical language and textual production of the Life of Melania the Younger written in the fifth century. In so doing, the author investigates the broader religious and socio-cultural contexts of the two forms of conflicting rhetorics in the text, according to socio-rhetorical criticism. The tension of the dual subjectivity arising from the asceticism of the heart and the ideological and material aspects of Christian imperialism in the context of Jerusalem and Constantinople takes the reader into unexplored intellectual territory.

This book explores the issue of developing computer competence in students of translation. The volume reviews the most prominent translation competence and translator training models. Its primary goal, however, is to show how computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools may affect trainee translators and to what degree. As the main issues in the CAT-based classroom come to light, the author discusses how to negate them in order to prepare students to enter the professional market. In addition, the volume attempts to redefine the notion of a translator in the contemporary world. Finally, it and debates the importance of thorough computer education of translators as one of the conditions warranting professional success.

<![CDATA[ The Tongan Double Canoes ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864946 Editeur : Peter Lang

The double canoe constituted the backbone of Polynesian culture, since it enabled the Polynesians to enter and conquer the Pacific. In Tonga, a center of Polynesian navigation, two types were known: the tongiaki and the kalia. Contrary to most contributions, the author argues that the Tongans were not only the Western Pacific masters of navigation, but also of canoe designing. Typical of Polynesian canoes was the sewing technique which can be traced back to ancient India but was also practiced in Pharanoic Egypt and southern Europe. The legend of the magnetic mountain is to be viewed in this context. Oceanic navigation, which declined during the 19th century, had developed its own means of orientation at sea, including astronomy and meteorology.

<![CDATA[ The Resurrection of the «Spectre» : A Marxist Analysis of Race, Class and Alienation in the Post-war British Novel ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864944 Editeur : Peter Lang

This book analyses the literary works of Alan Sillitoe, Sam Selvon, Doris Lessing and James Kelman since each of them is a representative of a different class or colour or gender or region in post-war Britain. The overall aim of the book is to reconceptualise the broader economic, cultural and social framework of the processes of alienation and of escape mechanisms employed by the individual as defence mechanisms in capitalist cultures. Suggesting that postmodern identity politics is unable to give a materialistic articulation of poverty and subordination, the book develops an anti-establishment, egalitarian and emancipatory framework in reading its authors: one which might also be implemented as part of a movement that aims to critique, resist and overthrow injustice and oppression.

<![CDATA[ Action, Belief, and Community ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864943 Editeur : Peter Lang

This is a study about man who is a part of the world of physical events, including actions. As a bunch of actions which are conditioned by beliefs and other attitudes, man co-creates communities which emerge and vanish along time. While generating and undergoing changes man is potentially a dynamic and flexible creature who at least partially manages relations with the world, including other men. This study is of an interdisciplinary nature, where the author merges philosophy and cultural anthropology with insight into sociology and communication studies. At the same time, the author takes an anti-essentialist position, where the study is a hypothetical construct. While doing this, the author assembles a particular vocabulary, where action, belief and community are addressed by communication, culture, thickness and the like concepts.

This unique book, inspired by the work of Umberto Eco - one of the greatest semioticians of all times - provides a compelling overview of current developments in semiotic research, bringing together various academic voices and critical reflections on the nature and function of signs, signification, and communication. Contributors, including Eco himself, discuss the status quo of the discipline, its scope, theoretical orientations, and methodological approaches, shedding light on the cognitive and philosophical complexity of the meaning-making process and form?meaning interfaces. The book is an outcome of the SIVO Signum-Idea-Verbum-Opus project initiated by Umberto Eco's keynote address during his visit at the University of ?ód? in 2015. More theoretical insights and further explorations into contemporary semiosphere can be found in Current Perspectives in Semiotics: Texts, Genres, and Representations, published simultaneously by Peter Lang.

<![CDATA[ Public Diplomacy : Strategic Engagement in Conflicted Communities ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864940 Editeur : Peter Lang

Ever since ancient times, diplomacy has always been the most important form of communication used by state and non-state actors in the process of shaping their mutual relations for making desired non-conflictual state sustainable while protecting their securities and preserving their interests without fighting at all levels. Diplomacy is also regarded as a process which should be conducted in many tracks concurrently. Public diplomacy, as one of those tracks, can be defined as the efforts conducted by state actors towards the foreign public audiences in order to bring multidimensional differences together on common grounds, while opening space to the traditional diplomacy through common social, cultural and humanitarian values.

This book compiles the contributions presented at the conference "The Role of Public Diplomacy in Bringing the Conflicted Communities Together," organized by Yunus Emre Institute Cultural Diplomacy Academy and Global Public Diplomacy Network, as well as through the valuable contributions of globally recognized academics, diplomats, and practitioners from around the world. The book concentrates mainly on hands-on public diplomacy solutions and discusses public diplomacy as for the strategic engagement process with the conflicted communities.

<![CDATA[ Texte, Fragmentation, Créativité II / Text, Fragmentation, Creativity II : Penser le fragment littéraire / Studies on a fragment in literature ]]> http://univ-senegal.scholarvox.com/catalog/book/88864938 Editeur : Peter Lang

A literary work can be considered as a place under the influence of opposing forces. On the one hand, there are deconstructing forces which, by affecting the structure, interfere with its continuity; on the other hand, there are counteracting forces that seek to connect separated parts to create a new unity. The contributions in this book examine the formal and semantic functioning of a fragment in French and Francophone literature. They prove that the decomposition of form does not cause the destruction of the work, but releases all its creative potential.

This book proposes reflections on the text, which we treat as a product of discursive activity that we observe at various levels of its architecture - both at the sequence level and in relation to the global structure. Our research focuses on fragmentation and fragment, two important concepts that we capture here not as a destructive factor for the whole structure according to the canonical order or norm, but as an invitation to reconsider the hidden potential of a once fixed structure.

Seventy-five years after the Holocaust, Poland's approach to its murdered Jewish community still remains a highly debated and often politicized issue. This book addresses this contested topic in an interdisciplinary way, integrating the approaches of memory studies, social anthropology and sociology. The authors revisited the material from the fieldwork carried out 25 years ago and compared it with the interviews collected recently with the younger generation of Poles. The result is a fascinating account of the process of collective forgetting that offers not only an original insight into Christian-Jewish relations after the Holocaust, but also a significant contribution to the reflection on the social mechanisms of remembrance and identity-building.

Litanic verse is based on different syntactic and rhetorical devices, such as enumeration, parallelism, anaphora, and epiphora. Its Italian variants are not to be seen as a mere convention of versification, but as a multifactorial phenomenon, which involves semantic and performative aspects as well. The variants reveal their different faces within various periods, beginning with the Duecento. This book analyzes Italian poetry up until the first decades of the twentieth century, together with certain musical pieces that are closely related to the history of literature. The monograph is the fourth of five volumes devoted to the emergence and development of litanic verse in the literature of European regions.

Despite the numerous famous examples of «les litanies» in French poetry, the manner in which the structures of this form of worship affect the versification strategies of poems has not previously been discussed thoroughly. Litanic verse, whose origins are as ancient as those of the litany genre, is recognized in works whose poetic diction, in whole or in part, includes the distinctive features of the litany, such as enumeration, parallelism, anaphora, and epiphora. The third volume describes the development of litanic verse from troubadour poetry and Old French religious verse up to World War II. This rich and multifaceted material is presented in chronological order and in the context of different literary genres.

Kusaal is a Mabia (traditional Gur) language spoken in north-eastern Ghana. Until recently, there was a paucity of linguistic research on the language, thus, the need for a concise and lucid grammar. The study adopts a holistic linguistic approach to language documentation and description drawing on a corpus of synchronic data collected on fieldtrips. The analysis of the data is guided by a confluence of structural and functional grammar approaches following Payne (1997) and Dixon's (2010) Basic Linguistic Theory. The phonology, nouns and noun class systems, nominal modifiers and relator nouns, verbs, phrases, aspect and modality, clause structure, verb serialisation and pragmatically marked structures are considered together with a speech form similar to «signifying/playing the dozens».
